Azelia is a leading Langhe producer with over one hundred years of winemaking history in the Barolo zone, located in the village of Castiglione Falletto. The fourth- and fifth-generation team of Luigi and Lorenzo Scavino are self-described “terrible perfectionists,” relentlessly focused on learning, improving, and refining in the vineyards and the cellar. That means hand harvesting, fermenting with indigenous yeast, submerged cap maceration lasting for 55 to 60 days, and aging in large, old botti.
Azelia’s single cru Barolos come from prized vineyard sources in Castiglione Falletto (Bricco Fiasco) and Serralunga d’Alba (San Rocco, Margheria, Cerretta, and Bricco Voghera). Each wine is magnificently expressive of site and vintage, revealing immense complexity when given time to rest in a cool cellar. The father-son team remains rooted in Langhe classics, meaning they make only red wine, with Langhe Nebbiolo, Barbera d’Alba, and Dolcetto d’Alba rounding out their lineup. Despite their easy appeal, these wines are made with the same care and precision as the flagship Barolos and will gain complexity if given additional time to age. We'll be featuring each of these unique reds during the dinner, including a flight of 3 of their special cru vineyard sites.
